The Western Black-legged Tick (Ixodes pacificus)

May contain: animal, insect, invertebrate, and tick

The Western Black-legged Tick (Ixodes pacificus) is found on the western coast of North America and has been detected in the San Bernardino and San Jacinto mountains around Coachella Valley. There is no evidence of its presence at the lower elevations in the Valley.  These ticks transmit the bacteria causing anaplasmosis and Lyme disease in humans.  However, ticks found in the Valley’s surrounding areas have tested negative to date.
