Dr. Kunz was born in rural southeastern Idaho. He split his time growing up between Ogden and Provo, Utah and Silver Spring, Maryland. His summers were spent on the family ranch near Victor, Idaho where at age six he developed a love of animals and a desire to make sick and injured ones better.

After graduation from Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland he attended Utah State University in Logan, Utah for two years. He then spent two and a half years as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in southern France and the French speaking area of Switzerland.  Upon his return, he continued his education at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in August of 1971. He then obtained a Master of Science Degree in animal nutrition from Brigham Young University in December of 1973. His veterinary education was obtained from Colorado State University where he graduated in May of 1977.

While at Brigham Young University, he met his lovely wife Colleen Ross. They were married in August of 1970. This year, they celebrated 52 wonderful years together. They are the parents of five children and have 20 grandchildren.

Dr. Kunz has practiced small animal medicine and surgery in Palm Spring, California for the past 45 years. He currently practices at VCA Desert Animal Hospital in Palm Springs where he also serves as medical director.

He has served on the California Veterinary State Board Exam Review Committee and the Medical Advisory Board for PetDrX, Inc. He is a contributing author of the Textbook of Veterinary Internal Medicine.

Dr. Kunz was also involved in the founding of Animal Emergency Clinic of the Desert and served as president of the board of directors for over 20 years until its sale to XLNT Veterinary Care, Inc. in January of 2007.

He has served as president of Friends of the Palm Springs Animal Shelter. The organization, in partnership with the City of Palm Springs, successfully constructed and now manages the beautiful shelter on the corner of Mesquite Ave and Vella Road in Palm Springs. He continues to serve on that board.

Dr. Kunz enjoyed Boy Scouts as a youth, and has been a leader for 40 years. He has served in a variety of positions such as Cubmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster and committee member of Pack and Troop 86. He has served as Council Vice President of Field Operations, a member of the District Committee and Chairman of the Sunrise District. He has been awarded the District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver Award for his service. He continues to serve the youth of the Inland Empire.

Dr. Kunz has represented the City of Palm Springs as a trustee on the board of the Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District since 2016.
