Indio, CA, November 2011:
The Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District received confirmation from the Center for Vectorborne Diseases (UC Davis) of 2 sentinel chickens that tested positive for West Nile virus (WNv) positive in the Coachella Valley. The samples were taken from coops located in Thermal and southwest of Mecca.

The Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District received confirmation, from the Riverside Department of Public Health, of a West Nile virus (WNv) positive human case from Cathedral City. This is the first WNv human case documented in the Coachella Valley in 2011. District staff will continue mosquito and WNv surveillance, larviciding, and public awareness in these areas, in an effort to reduce the number of adult mosquitoes.

Indio, CA, October 2011:
On August 31st Aedes albopictus (Asian tiger mosquito) was discovered in Los Angeles County in the City of El Monte. The discovery was made by the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District responding to a phone call of resident complaining of a day-biting mosquito. There is no indication that the Asian tiger mosquito is in the Coachella Valley, as this mosquito is from tropical origins and our desert environment may not provide its preferred environment..........

Sacramento, CA, October 2011:
A 37-year-old man and an 86-year-old man, both from Kern County, are the first reported fatalities from West Nile virus (WNV) this year, Dr. Ron Chapman, director of the California Department of Public Health, announced today
“These unfortunate deaths remind us of the potential danger from mosquito bites and West Nile virus,” Chapman said. To date in 2011, 88 human cases of WNV from 18 California counties have been reported. Last year 111 cases and six fatalities were reported.....

Indio, CA, September 2011:
The eight West Nile virus (WNv) positive mosquito samples, collected in the area southeast/ southwest of Mecca near the Salton Sea, have prompted the District to schedule ultra low volume (ULV) ground applications and barrier treatments, using truck mounted sprayers, to reduce the risk of disease transmission by adult mosquitoes. Ground ULV will begin Friday, September 9th, between 7:15pm - 9:30pm, and go for 10 consecutive nights, weather permitting...........

The bird, a northern mockingbird, was found on September 23rd in the Palm Springs area. There will be increase in the District’s adult mosquito surveillance and control measures in this area.
